Scott Snyder and Jock together again!
Batman: Black Mirror was one of the best stories in the Batman universe since, well... ever! And here we are returning to Scott Snyder's roots in independent horror comics. To call this book "wild and imaginative" is an understatement. Snyder is truly a comic book rock star.
The bloody and explosive opening panels set the tone so well you almost know exactly what to expect and yet that still feels horrifyingly satisfying. The Rooks family and their daughter Sailor are just moving into a new home after facing a horrible tragedy. The family is settling in to their new home and Sailor is trying to re-adjust to her new school when Snyder starts revealing the inner workings of the plot. I don't want to give anything away but if this series progresses this way we could have an Eisner Award winner on our hands.
The art is spectacular and peculiar simultaneously. Capturing the eye and keeping you on your toes at the same time. We don't often get to see handdrawn comics in this day and age and it's nice to see the art isn't lost.
The promise of this first issue is limitless and no one knows how to create a modern mythology better than Snyder. After all his accomplishments on Batman: Court of Owls and American Vampire you'd think he'd be loosing steam but if this issue is any indication of the things to come for this title we could be in for one hell of a ride.
