Review: Convergence Swamp Thing 01

I'm such a huge fan of Swamp Thing, going

all the way back to Len Wein's first run and the introduction of John Constantine, Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman. The darker side of the DC Universe was my first love in comics. My parents never let me watch horror movies so I found my horror deep in the back corner of the DCU and safely hidden in the guise of superhero comics from my protective parental units.

I really enjoyed Swamp Thing in the New 52

and, for all New 52's missteps, Swamp Thing, Animal Man and Justice League Dark was something most fans agreed DC got right. This issue is the first inkling into what will be happening with Swamp Thing post-Convergence and I have to say they have managed to astound me in ways that only DC can and I couldn't be happier. Len Wein returns to Swamp Thing with incredible results. Without giving too much away they have managed to take the best elements from New 52 (the green connection, god level power) and merge it with the original elements of Swamp Thing (Alec Hollands accident and the Plant that believed it was a man) and what you get is a beautiful, old school horror comic with some really wonderful artwork by Kelley Jones (Sandman, Swamp Thing) that just breathes personality and charisma into this book. Each panel is given a life of it's own and a unique look that can only be found in horror comics. This book feels so 1980s DC Comics that it just oozes with the quality and class that only a writer like Lein Wein can deliver. If this is the direction Swampy is headed in the new DC You, then I'm on board! Writing: 10 Art: 10 Cover: 10 Overall: 10
